Difference between DDR3 and DDR4 Random access memories:

Most of the time, quality ram allows your computer to run better. 

What is DDR stands for?

The term DDR stands for double data rate. This term came into use when the first Dual Speed Ram modules arrived. DDR RAM is capable of two data transfers per clock cycle, giving the theoretical peak bandwidth of the previous SDRAM at the same clock speed.

What is DDR3 RAM?

DDR3 is a type of DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) released in June 2007 as a successor to DDR2. DDR3 chips have bus speeds from 400 MHz to 1066 MHz, sizes from 1 GB to 24 GB and use almost 30% less power than their predecessors.

DDR3 RAM sticks for a computer have 240 pins. For a laptop, DDR3 RAM sticks have 204 legs.

These memory chips can only install on a motherboard that supports DDR3 memory and is not backward compatible with DDR2 memory slots.

What is DDR4 RAM?

DDR4 offers higher performance, higher DIMM capacity, better data integrity, and lower power consumption. DDR4 achieves over 2 Gbps per Speed and uses less power than DDR3L (low voltage DDR3).

It delivers up to 50% higher performance and bandwidth, reducing power consumption in the overall computing environment. It represents a significant improvement over previous memory technologies and energy savings of up to 40%.

Difference Between DDR3 and DDR4:

DDR3 and DDR4

Physically a DDR4 module or two-line memory module (DIMM) is very similar to a DDR3 DIMM. However, DDR4 has 288 feet compared to the 240 feet of DDR3; DDR4 SO-DIMMS has 260 pins instead of 204 in DDR3. The DDR4 key has in another position. 

The edge plug looks like a slightly curved V for easy insertion. This design also reduces input power. It is not all legs connection at the same time as modules place.

DDR4 consider as the future RAM:

What is the difference between DDR3 and DDR4? DDR3 worked well, while DDR4 is the newly chosen memory. However, all modern platforms (since 2017) switch to DDR4. Most Intel platforms move away from DDR3 with the sixth-generation Skylake CPU. So if you’re looking at an 8th or 9th generation or later Core CPU or AMD Ryzen processor, use DDR4.

But what about older CPUs, is there such a big difference between DDR3 and DDR4? The short answer is yes. There are many differences, but often your Main circuit will base you. A standard DDR4 slot circuit cannot use DDR3. It is not possible to put DDR4 into a DDR3 slot.

DDR4 operates at a lower voltage than DDR3. 

DDR4 is typically workable at 1.2 V, less than 1.5 V DDR3. It has no sound that much. There are low voltage DDR3L modules and enthusiastic DDR4 modules where the voltage overlaps, but the standard modules are 1.2 V compare to 1.5 V DDR3, not much for home users.

Another inevitable difference between DDR3 and DDR4 is the speed rate. The DDR3 specification officially starts at 800 MT / s (or millions of broadcasts per second) and ends at DDR3-2133. 

Some acceleration modules even went as far as DDR3-3200 and more, but it’s about unofficial speeds. DDR4 meanwhile starts at 1600 MHz with official support up to DDR4-3200, and acceleration kits can even reach DDR4-4800. Higher speed means an overall increase in bandwidth.

Algorithm efficiencies:

A simpler upgrade algorithm relates to the number of RAM upgrades. It doesn’t close too long. 

Older DDR3 RAM uses two different algorithms that are; AR (automatic update) and SR (automatic update). It varies between the two depending on the scenario and the amount of voltage applied to the system. 

However, DDR4 only uses automatic updates, which means that it is actively updated to ensure that new information does not expect to be processed. 

Because DDR4 RAM consumes much less power, it has paved the way for developers to use AR solo, resulting in a much more efficient product.

Why DDR4 Better than DDR3 for Gaming Purposes?

DDR4 is better than DDR3 in almost every way imaginable, except for a possible price and a 2% hidden increase. As such, this is the preferred RAM format for modern gaming.

Of course, the RAM of at least all the components of the gaming platform has a low effect on game functionality, but it is still valuable, especially at 1080p.

When you connect your scene to a 1440p screen or higher, your system’s RAM load shifts to your GPU’s built-in memory, but at 1080p, there’s still a lot of data responsible for your RAM for quick access. It means that the DDR4 format with higher bandwidth, higher clock speed, and lower latency can give you fair specific frames per second. 

When a higher resolution is assumed, the difference between DDR4 and DDR3 drops to a few frames per second.

DDR3 Advantages:

Here I mention some of the advantages of using DDR3;

  • DDR3 consumes less power.
  • DDR3 offers battery delay compared to DDR2.
  • Allow higher data rates for bandwidth or peak.
  • DDR3 transmits data at higher speeds, up to 6400 MBps.

DDR4 Advantages:

Here I highlight some benefits of using DDR4:

  • DDR4 is suitable for fast games.
  • DDR4 offers higher DIMM capacities.
  • The data rate transfer is faster than in previous versions.
  • The delay of DDR4 is better than some other versions of DDR.
  • DDR4 offers a higher modular density and consumes very little power.
  • DDR4 can be sent at higher speeds with very low voltage, without any cooling.
  • DDR4 only updates the content by updating automatically, so it also consumes less power.


I conclude that you should choose the RAM of your computer according to your purpose and computer generation. Although, DDR4 is far better than DDR3 in all aspects.
